Accomplishing Goals

Recently, my 50-something-year-old brother celebrated an incredible accomplishment—he had just completed his first triathlon. This feat is all the more impressive because over the past two years he has lost more than 100 pounds, and this race was the culmination of his fierce determination to improve his health.

This feat is all the more impressive because over the past two years he has lost more than 100 pounds, and this race was the culmination of his fierce determination to improve his health.

His story led me to think about the accomplishments made by those in this month’s issue, including the riders who are competing at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France (Aug. 23–Sept. 7). We followed these competitors through the Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany, in July, to see which horse-and-rider pairs would be most likely to help their countries make a run for the medal podiums. The competition proved that anything can happen and that hard work does pay off. You can read more about this on p. 50.

Another accomplishment is that of Olympian Lisa Wilcox and her current mount, Denzello. In 2004, after living and training in Europe for more than a decade, Wilcox returned to the U.S. lacking the level of horses with which she was involved abroad. But that didn’t stop Wilcox, who earned a trip (with Denzello) to compete in Europe this summer with the U.S. team. Read more about her return to international competition in “Quiet Fortitude” on p. 30.

In most success stories, hard work precedes reward. Our cover story this month focuses on just that. In “Normal Before Brilliant” Olivia LaGoy-Weltz, one of this year’s top Intermediaire contenders, offers exercises on how to patiently harness your horse’s power to create a balanced and harmonious ride (p. 36).

The DT team has seen its own accomplishments, including that of Contributing Editor Hilary Moore Hebert. As former senior editor, Hilary recently scaled back her hours so that she could focus more attention on her training business and busy show schedule. Fortunately for us, she will continue to share her expertise.

Also contributing to the magazine are Technical Editor Beth Baumert (former DT editor) and Technical Consultant Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel, a longtime supporter of the magazine. Rounding out the team is our new Assistant Editor Lindsay Paulsen. A recent graduate of Otterbein University (and dressage convert), Lindsay interned with us in 2012. Needless to say, she left us with a great impression and we are thrilled to now have her on board full-time.

I am so excited to be a part of this team, and I look forward to bringing you more educational and insightful stories about this sport we love so much.

Until next time …
