A Step Backward

A step backward, this week … Forrest, out to play and wearing his bell boots, managed to grab his heel not once, not twice, but three times! Twice on the left fore:

And a particularly nasty one on the right fore:

There is never a good time for a horse to be off, particularly when you feel as though you’ve been making great strides and are very much in the zone in regards to training! I had hoped to give you a “Right Lead Canter” report and, truthfully, we have done it. And while I’m being truthful, let me confess that it took two attempts and the depart came complete with an airy buck. But as soon as we were actually in the canter, it was lovely—relaxed, flowing and quite balanced. He landed in a dynamic, purposeful trot, and I immediately rewarded him with a stretch. I have no photos of this as my hubbie was out of town and I was riding on my own (oh, yes, I’m very safe. I text him, “Getting on” and later a text, “Getting off,” as though he could be of any help to me, lying unconscious in the arena, while he was on his business trip in Arizona).

So, depressingly, Forrest needs a few days off for those gnarly things to heal and I quickly invested in another pair of bell boots, which are advertised to “never turn.” However, as I write, he is pretty much healed up and haired over and I think I’ll be able to longe him and perhaps get on in the next day or two.

While Forrest has been on hold, I decided to finish a couple of embarrassingly over-due projects which took a solid day, each. The first was pressure washing and then staining the outside of my barn:

And then slapping on a couple of coats of poly on the interior:

To which Forrest gave two hooves up!

So I’ll give my horse the time he needs, and hopefully, we’ll be back on target for next week’s blog.
