Like many of you, I have the horse gene. My earliest memories are of looking for and wanting horses in my life. I finally got my own horse when I was 16 and my mare was 3. What a happy day. We learned together and she was the most patience wonderful horse anyone could ever have. She gave me four foals, and I kept her until she died at age 33.

I grew up in Houston, Texas, and my earliest training was in dressage and combined training. I went to Maryland as a working student and eventually received a Horsemaster's certificate from the Potomac Horse Center. At the time, it was the only kind of certification for teaching one could get.

I taught for three years at Oldfields School in Maryland but moved closer to Washington DC after marrying where I evented and showed at lower level dressage as a member of the Potomac Valley Dressage Assn. I also began riding sidesaddle, which I enjoyed for a number of years in the hunt field and at shows. I rode sidesaddle in three inaugural parades!

I've taken care of about a dozen horses from the PMU farms over the last seven or eight years. That's another story.

I began writing for The Maryland Horse in the mid 1970s and then wrote occasionally for the Chronicle of the Horse in the 1980s. I went back to school and earned a B.A. in English at Hood College in 1993 and an MFA in creative writing at The American University in 1996. I came to work at Dressage Today in 1999 and have been here ever since.

I've learned a lot about writing and the magazine business, but the main lesson I've learned is that Dressage Today should contain what the reader's want to know. So I've tried to listen and respond to our readers' needs over the years. That means I need to hear from you! So please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail (plasko@aimmedia.com). We are always looking for article topics and ideas, names of good people for Ask the Experts, photos for The Clinic and thoughts on other departments. Tell me the people you want to hear from and I will try to make it happen.
