Sundance Film Festival

The nice thing about the off-season for horse trainers is you can very easily live under a rock. Sure, I know about the disaster in Haiti, but I couldn’t necessarily tell you about the “new black” or the latest teen heartthrob.

So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to hear that I had NO idea that this week is the Sundance Film Festival in – you guessed it – Park City, Utah.

There I was, in the Salt Lake City Airport, waiting for my Shuttle to Diane’s house in Provo and I started to notice that all of the people getting bags seemed very “New York” to me. Don’t get me wrong, my brother and sister-in-law live in Brooklyn, so I am only saying they looked like all of there friends – and not your common Joe “weekend skier” Smith in from Rhode Island for a long weekend.

Get in the Shuttle and the lady behind me starts talking about how she just finalized a script with Wes Craven. Guy next to me is buys movies for some big company.

“What do you do?” they ask me.

“I am a horse trainer and I am here to learn to judge horse shows,” I say.

“That is the coolest thing I have ever heard! Horses are cool,” they reply.

“Are you guys here on work or holiday?” I stupidly ask.
“We are here for the Festival,” they reply.

“Cool. What Festival is that?” I, again, stupidly ask.

“You know. Sundance,” they answered.

No. I didn’t know.

I got out of the Shuttle thinking how amazing it is that everyone has their own unique interests and that is what makes the world go round. For every person in that Shuttle that refers to their passion simply as “Sundance”, there is someone else who calls it “watching the Sox at Fenway” or “shopping at Saks”.

In dressage alone, there are so many different passions – riding a perfect trot by yourself in the indoor, winning Regionals, passing the “L” Program or simply feeding your horse carrots at the end of a long day.

Whatever your passion: Find it and make it your own. We all must have our own “Sundance”.
