If I were a fiction writer, I would begin this post with a clever opener that expressed how I feel right now. It would set the scene for my current New Year’s resolution and how I feel nothing like I imagine celebrities do when I see them on the covers of checkout-line magazines. After countless (OK, 10) days of eating healthier and exercising too much, I do not feel fit, energized or glowing. While I appreciate that I must be building strength and stamina, the combination of riding every horse in a way that pushes me and doing a Jillian Michaels workout DVD every night has made it so I cannot actually lift my arms above my head right now. The fatigue I am experiencing makes me want to do nothing more than lie in bed, motionless. The only times I feel energized are when I get to eat my Greek frozen yogurt (and pretend it is ice cream) and when my body’s adrenaline kicks in after the first 10 minutes of riding (to compensate for the fact that I can’t lift my arms above my head). Since I have done this type of thing in the past for my wedding, I can confirm that pushing yourself to 100 percent when working out definitely makes you look better and get stronger but you have no reserves to do things … like lift your arms in the middle of the day. Granted, if you take a day off after working out like that you will notice you can lift a bag of grain like it was a box of cereal. So while I don’t plan on feeling energized anytime soon, I will find strength in knowing that when I see those checkout-line celebrities walk down the red carpet at the Academy Awards, they probably can’t lift their arms up either.
