Since this year my resolution is to help our horses have more fun, here is a great idea to try. Riding with out a bit is not for all horses, but if you have a pretty calm and amicable type you might want to give it a try. It can be a good way to check and make sure that you are using your body effectively and not relying on your hands too much. It also can give your horse a break from the bit. Horses with sensitive mouths can benefit from this. I have seen an increase in the use of hackemores in the jumper ring and some eventers are using them for there stadium rounds. Here my student Kelly and her quarter horse Sinatra demonstrate the use of bit less riding with a noseband hackemore that you can get at most any tack store. Has anyone gone bit less before? If so please share your experience with us. If you haven’t yet; give it a try and let us know how it goes!
