July 23, 2024—The Fédération Equestre Internationale announced the provisional suspension of British dressage Olympian Charlotte Dujardin. This decision renders the worldwide No. 4-ranked dressage rider ineligible to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nor can she participate in other events under the jurisdiction of the FEI or National Federation (NF). The British Equestrian Federation followed suite with this provisional suspension. This will make Dujardin ineligible to compete in any national events during this period.
In a statement, the FEI reported that on July 22, 2024 a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant submitted a video depicting Dujardin engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare. The footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Dujardin at a private stable, according to the information received.
“A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session. Understandably, the FEI is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition, including the Paris Olympics, while this process takes place,” Dujardin said in a statement she released on social media. “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils; however, there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in the moment.”
Pending Investigations
Upon receiving the video, the FEI promptly initiated an investigation in which Dujardin, British Equestrian and British Dressage were informed of the allegations. Dujardin requested to be provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the investigations. She voluntarily withdrew from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She also confirmed that she will not participate in any competitions pending the outcome of the FEI’s investigation.
“I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors,” Dujardin continued in the statement she released on social media. “I will cooperate fully with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation and British Dressage during their investigations and will not comment further until the process is complete.”
The FEI condemns any conduct contrary to equine welfare and has robust rules in place to address such behavior.
“We are deeply disappointed with this case, especially as we approach the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. But our commitment to ensuring the highest standards of equine welfare remains unwavering,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “It is crucial that we address any instances of abuse. We cannot compromise equine welfare.”
The FEI acknowledged the cooperation of Dujardin, British Equestrian and British Dressage with the ongoing investigation.
“Charlotte has expressed genuine remorse for her actions. We recognize and appreciate her willingness to take responsibility,” De Vos added. “The timing is unfortunate. But we believe this action reaffirms the FEI’s commitment to welfare as the guardians of our equine partners and the integrity of our sport.”
