Toward the end of March, we asked our Dressage Today community: If gas prices remain high, will you think twice about the number of shows you compete in with your dressage horse this spring and summer? About 60% of respondents said that gas prices would not affect their show plans, while 40% said that they would limit the number of shows they compete in or only participate in local schooling shows or clinics.

Several respondents noted that gas prices won’t affect their decision to show nearly as much as increased show and horse-care costs. Participants pointed to higher membership, entrance, grooming, trainer and class fees, as well increasing vet, boarding and feed costs, as driving factors in their decisions on what types of shows they opt participate in.

Outside the U.S., dressage riders in Australia reported that with gas prices averaging $9 to $12 a gallon purchase is being restricted in certain areas and many are not able to travel to competitions at all or are minimizing their participation. Other dressage riders in Australia said that some competitions are being canceled altogether.
